Interview | Georgia Cussons | WSL

We sat down with new signing Georgia Cussons to preview the opening game of the Women's Super League, as the Giants face York Valkyrie.

With the first few games under her belt for the Giants, we discussed numerous topics as she and the team get the Super League campaign up and running today.

How have the past few months been playing your first few games for Huddersfield, in the Challenge Cup?

It’s been really exciting and something I’ve really enjoyed. The Challenge Cup games have been a great way to settle into the team and test ourselves early on against strong opposition. Personally, it’s taken a little bit of time to adapt to new combinations and systems, but I feel like I’m growing in confidence every week and building good connections with the girls around me. It’s been a really positive start.

How exciting is it for yourself to be back in a Super League environment?

It’s really exciting. Super League is the level every player wants to be competing at consistently, so to be back in that environment is something I’m proud of. The standards, intensity and professionalism around the group pushes you every day, and I feel like it’s an environment where I can keep developing both as a player and as a person.

Goals for yourself, and then for the team in 2026?

Personally, I just want to keep improving week by week, become more consistent in my performances and do whatever I can to help the team. I always want to challenge myself against the best players and continue developing all areas of my game. Another big goal for me is putting myself in the best possible position for Wales and pushing towards World Cup selection, so every training session and game this year is important for me individually.

As a team, we really want to push into that top four and close the gap on the teams above us. There’s a lot of potential in this group and we want to prove we can compete consistently with the top sides in the competition. The focus is on building throughout the season, competing every week and creating a team that nobody looks forward to playing against.

Which games stand out to you the most/who are you most looking forward to facing?

The games against the top teams are always the ones that stand out because they really test you as a player and as a team. Obviously the York fixtures are ones I look forward to as well with it being my old club, so there’s always that extra bit around those games. But this year, we can’t afford to take any team for granted because every game leading up to the split is massive if we want to secure a top four spot. Every point matters and we know we need to be consistent week in, week out.

The challenges that York pose, you’ve already faced them once this season, does that make it easier/harder?

I think it helps in some ways because we’ve already experienced their intensity and know the standards they bring, so there’s no surprises going into it. At the same time, it’s still a huge challenge because they’re such a strong side across the park. We’ll need to be better in key moments, stay connected defensively and match their physicality for the full 80 minutes.
